About the Memory Research Center

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Memory Research Center opened in 2001 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Our Center is funded by the National Institutes of Health. The National Institutes of Health fund 29 Centers throughout the country. These Centers all work toward one primary goal: finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and other memory disorders. The UAMS Memory Research Center works to educate our community about Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of research participation as well as to enroll members of the community into our research programs. The research knowledge gained through our program is shared with the other Centers to find new treatments, promote a better quality of life for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers and, ultimately, to find a cure for this disease.

The UAMS Memory Research Center is located in the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Little Rock, Arkansas, on the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences campus. The Memory Research Center has a research focus and does not provide treatment.

Medical care is available at the UAMS Senior Health Center in the Reynolds Institute on Aging. The UAMS Senior Health Clinic has services to assist persons who have concerns about their memory. Their goal is to provide patients with the best and most accurate memory testing available. To achieve this goal, patients are seen by a team of health professionals that includes geriatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, psychologists and social workers. This team works together to provide a diagnosis and treatment for the patient. Patients are also given suggestions on activities that may help them keep their memory. With the patient’s permission, this information is shared with the patient’s doctor. Patients continue to see their doctors for their usual care. Many of these same professionals work with the Memory Research Center and encourage their patients to become a part of the Memory Research Center program. The Senior Health Clinic and the Memory Research Center use the same memory tests.
