Cellular and Neuropathology Research

Dr. Robert Mrak, Core Leader, and Dr. Sue Griffin, Associate Core Leader, lead our efforts in the Neuropathology Core. Our Core has two principle diagnostic goals: to assess patient's genetic risk for Alzheimer's Disease and to provide patient's families with more certain diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease by examining the brain at autopsy. These assessments also provide useful information to ADC clinicians, and provide tissue and fluid samples for Alzheimer research. Such research is necessary to determine the causes of Alzheimer's Disease, to identify potential risks for development of the disease, and to develop strategies for assessing these risks toward the goals of earlier diagnosis and of possible treatments. Toward these goals, we also collect, at the time of autopsy, tissues from other organs that may be useful in diagnosis and development of treatment strategies. Enrollment of the elderly without dementia is also critical for these goals, to allow comparisons with Alzheimer patients. A third function of the Neuropathology Core is the provision of educational support for families of Alzheimer patients and for the general public.
